Court Stops Presidential Decree Nullifying General Elections

The High court has suspended President Banda's decree nullifying the general elections and has told the Malawi Electoral Commission to continue with its duties of counting the votes and announcing the winners of 2014 elections.

Lawyers Kalekeni Kaphale, Noel Chalamanda, Patrick Mpaka representing DPP, Malawi Electoral Commission, Malawi Law Society managed to get two orders (1) a stay order stopping the execution of the President directive to annull polls and (2) an order for judicial review of the president's directive.

Judge Kenyatta Nyirenda has further told State President Joyce Banda and state machinery not to interfere with MEC powers till the case in court is resolved.

This means that counting of votes continues at the National Tally Centre in Blantyre
