Woman Allegedly Killed by Ex-Husband in Bangwe Amid Reconciliation Pressure, Police Investigating
A woman in Bangwe township has reportedly been killed by her ex-husband after pressure was placed on both parties to reunite. Police are now treating the matter as murder.
A woman in Bangwe township, Blantyre, has allegedly been killed by her ex-husband following pressure on the two to reconcile, according to Bangwe Police.
The suspect, Mike Phiri, 48, allegedly attacked and killed the woman Madalo Moffat, 33, at Namatapa. Bangwe Spokesperson Sam Kadyole said that the two were once married but separated in 2025.
Kadyole said that the suspect was unhappy with her divorce and kept asking the woman for a reunion, but she continued to refuse.
This continued until July 12, 2026, when he followed his ex-wife to her workplace in Mpingwe where they quarrelled over the matter. Police said Moffat's employer released the deceased asking her to resume work after resolving her marital dispute. However, the quarrel continued on their way back home, and the suspect stabbed the deceased after noticing that another person was coming to intervene.
The matter was reported to Bangwe Police before being referred to the community health centre, where the deceased was pronounced dead. The deceased's body was later taken to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital pending postmortem.
Mike Phiri from Myambalika village Traditional Authority Ganya in Ntcheu is expected to appear in court to answer a murder charge.
Bangwe is one of the densely populated townships on the outskirts of Blantyre.
