Government Lifts Public Service Recruitment Freeze, Opens Door for Fresh Hiring
Chief Secretary Justin Saidi has reportedly issued a directive allowing ministries and departments to fill budgeted vacant posts in the 2026/27 financial year, ending a period of restricted public service hiring.

The government has reportedly lifted a freeze on public service recruitment, paving the way for ministries and departments to hire and promote staff in the new financial year. According to a statement signed by the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Justin Saidi , dated 3 July, government has issued a directive waiving restrictions that had blocked recruitment and promotions across the public service.
The directive allows government institutions to fill budgeted vacant posts in the 2026/27 financial year. The move, according to him, applies to posts that already carry budget allocations, meaning no new spending lines are being created.
The recruitment freeze had for some time limited the ability of public institutions to bring in new staff or advance existing employees. It is not yet clear from the statement what triggered the decision to lift the restrictions at this point, or whether any conditions or caps apply to the hiring process.
