MAM Chairmanship Nominations Close Friday Afternoon

Nominations for the chairmanship of the Muslim Association of Malawi close on Friday, 10 July, at 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

In a reminder issued on Wednesday, the chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Sheikh Ali Kennedy, urged aspirants to follow all the prescribed procedures, submitting nomination papers signed in all required places, together with proof of payment of the nomination fee.

"We encourage you all to do everything that is required. Sign in all the appropriate places, and when you bring your papers to our offices, make sure you have attached proof of the money you have paid," he said.

The fee, set at K5 million, was adopted by a vote of delegates at a general meeting, Sheikh Kennedy told Muslim Media Agency (MMA), with proposals having ranged from no fee to K7.5 million. A K1 million fee applied in the 2016 election.

The election, scheduled for 26 July, contests the chairmanship only; the candidate with the most votes becomes chairman and the runner-up vice-chairman. It is the association's first poll under the court's direction that the trustees conduct elections according to the 1994 constitution, following the annulment of the 2021 election.

Two aspirants, Arafat Nkata and Adil Chilungo, have already withdrawn from the race. MMA will report the final list of candidates once nominations close.
