Watch Your Tongue When Someone Owes You Money

It happens quietly, in homes, markets and WhatsApp groups across Malawi. Someone owes you money and, frustrated by the wait, you start talking. You tell a neighbour. You mention it at Friday prayers. You post something vague enough to be denied but pointed enough to be understood. Islam has something direct to say about all of that.

A creditor has a right to their money. That right is real and the faith does not ask anyone to pretend otherwise. But the right to recover a debt does not carry with it permission to damage the debtor's name. Scholars of Islamic ethics are consistent on this point: speaking about a person's financial failure in a way that lowers their standing in the community crosses into gheebah, backbiting, even when what you say is true.

The test is straightforward. If you mention the debt to someone who has no role in recovering it, you are not solving the problem; you are spreading it. The Prophet, peace be upon him, described gheebah as mentioning your brother in a way he would dislike. A man who has not repaid you would almost certainly dislike being discussed at a gathering he is not part of. That is the line.

There are exceptions. Seeking a legal remedy, consulting a scholar, or warning a business partner who is genuinely at risk of the same harm are all permissible grounds for disclosure. The intention and the audience are what separate legitimate complaint from slander.

Creditors are also reminded that a debtor in genuine hardship is in a different position from one who simply refuses to pay. The Quran in Surah Al-Baqarah is explicit: if a debtor is in difficulty, grant him time until it is easy for him to repay. Pressing hard words on someone already struggling adds a second burden on top of the first.

The amanah of holding someone's reputation is not suspended because they owe you money. Recover what is yours through the right channels. Keep the rest between you, them and Allah.
