Why Do Muslims Greet with "Assalamu Alaikum"?

When Muslims meet, they greet one another with the words "Assalamu Alaikum" — "Peace be upon you." It is far more than a casual hello. This greeting carries deep meaning, connects the believer to a long tradition of the prophets, and is itself an act of worship.

The Meaning of the Greeting

"Assalamu Alaikum" means "Peace be upon you," and the fuller form adds "wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh" — "and the mercy of Allah and His blessings." So with every greeting, a Muslim is not merely acknowledging another person but praying for peace, mercy, and blessing to descend upon them. The reply, "Wa alaikum assalam," returns the same prayer.

A Greeting of the Prophets

This greeting of peace is not new to Islam — it echoes through the tradition of the prophets. Expressions of peace as a greeting appear in earlier scriptures too; the Hebrew "Shalom aleichem" carries the same meaning. Islam continued and confirmed this beautiful practice, linking Muslims to a heritage shared by the messengers of God.

An Act of Worship and Unity

Spreading the greeting of peace is strongly encouraged in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that a person cannot truly enter Paradise until they believe, and will not truly believe until they love one another — then he pointed to spreading the salam as the means to achieve that love. He also encouraged Muslims to greet those they know and those they do not, making it a source of unity and warmth across the community.

More Than Words

Because the greeting is a prayer for peace, it also carries a responsibility: to actually be a source of peace and safety for others. A Muslim is described as one from whose tongue and hand other people are safe. The greeting of peace is thus a daily reminder of the character a believer is called to live by.

Every time a Muslim says "Assalamu Alaikum," they are wishing peace, mercy, and blessing on another soul, following the way of the prophets, and strengthening the bonds of faith and love within the community. It is a small phrase carrying a beautiful world of meaning.
