Ashura: Its Meaning and Lessons for Muslims

Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram, is one of the significant days in the Islamic calendar. It carries deep historical meaning and an authentic recommended practice, and it offers timeless lessons about faith, gratitude, and standing for the truth.

The History of Ashura

It is reported that when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) arrived in Madinah, he found the Jewish community fasting on the day of Ashura. They observed it in gratitude, marking the day Allah saved Prophet Musa (Moses) and his people from Pharaoh. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that he had more right to Musa than they did, and he fasted the day and encouraged Muslims to fast it as well.

The Recommended Fast

Fasting on Ashura is a confirmed Sunnah with great reward; it is reported to expiate the minor sins of the previous year. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also expressed the intention to fast the ninth of Muharram alongside the tenth, to distinguish the practice, so many Muslims fast both the ninth and tenth. This voluntary fast is open to every believer seeking its blessing.

The Lesson of Deliverance

At its heart, Ashura commemorates deliverance — the triumph of faith over tyranny, of the weak who trusted Allah over the powerful who defied Him. Musa and his people had no army to match Pharaoh's, yet Allah delivered them. The day reminds believers that ultimate victory belongs to those who hold firmly to the truth and place their trust in Allah, however overwhelming the odds appear.

Gratitude and Standing for Truth

Ashura calls the believer to two things: gratitude for Allah's help, and the courage to stand for what is right. Fasting the day expresses thankfulness, while reflecting on its history strengthens the resolve to uphold justice and truth in one's own life, trusting that Allah supports those who do.
