The Importance of the Holy Month of Muharram

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and one of the most honoured months of the year. Its very name means "forbidden" or "sacred," reflecting its special status. Understanding its importance helps believers begin the Islamic year with worship and reflection.

One of the Four Sacred Months

Muharram is one of the four sacred months that Allah singled out in the Qur'an: "Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve... of these, four are sacred." (Qur'an 9:36) In these months, wrongdoing is considered especially serious, and righteous deeds carry special weight. Fighting was traditionally forbidden in them, marking them as months of peace and reverence.

The Virtue of Fasting in Muharram

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave Muharram a special place for voluntary fasting. He said, as reported in Sahih Muslim, that the best fasting after the obligatory fasting of Ramadan is fasting in the month of Muharram, which he called "the month of Allah." This makes voluntary fasting during Muharram a highly rewarded act of worship.

The Day of Ashura

The tenth day of Muharram, known as Ashura, holds particular significance. It commemorates the day Allah saved Prophet Musa (Moses) and his people from Pharaoh. The Prophet (peace be upon him) fasted this day and encouraged Muslims to fast it, teaching that fasting Ashura expiates the minor sins of the previous year. Many Muslims also fast the ninth day alongside it, following his guidance.

Beginning the Year with Worship

As the opening month of the Islamic year, Muharram invites believers to start afresh with good intentions. It is a natural time for reflection, repentance, and renewed commitment to worship. By honouring Muharram through fasting and good deeds, a Muslim sets a spiritual tone for the entire year ahead.
