The Wedding Night in Islam: Etiquette and Guidance

After the Nikah, a married couple begins their life together, and the first night holds a special place. Islam, which guides every part of life, offers gentle and dignified guidance for this moment too — centred on kindness, mutual respect, and beginning the new bond with the remembrance of Allah.

Begin with Gentleness and Kindness

The overriding principle is tenderness. Marriage is described in the Qur'an as a source of tranquillity, love, and mercy between spouses (Qur'an 30:21). The husband is encouraged to put his wife at ease, to be gentle and patient, and to treat her with warmth rather than haste. A kind, unhurried beginning sets the tone for the whole marriage.

The Sunnah of Placing a Hand and Praying

It is reported in the Sunnah that a husband may place his hand gently on his wife's head and make a supplication for goodness and blessing, asking Allah for the good in her and seeking refuge from any harm. Beginning the relationship with the remembrance of Allah and a prayer for blessing invites His mercy into the marriage.

A Recommended Prayer Together

Some scholars mention that it is good for the couple to pray two units (rak'ahs) of voluntary prayer together at the start of their life, asking Allah to bless their union and grant them harmony. Whether or not a couple does this, the spirit behind it — turning to Allah together — is a beautiful foundation.

Modesty, Privacy and Mutual Rights

Islam teaches that intimacy between spouses is pure and rewarded, and it is a private matter to be kept between them. What passes between a husband and wife is not to be disclosed to others. Both spouses have rights over one another, and both are encouraged to fulfil each other's needs with love, patience, and consideration.

A Foundation of Mercy

The lasting lesson is that Islam frames marriage — from its very first night — around mercy, respect, and the pleasure of Allah. A marriage begun with gentleness, prayer, and consideration for one another is a marriage built on the strongest of foundations.
