Why Are Our Duas Not Accepted? Eight Reasons

Every believer at some point wonders why their heartfelt supplications seem to go unanswered, especially when Allah Himself promises in the Qur'an, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." (Qur'an 40:60) A famous answer comes from the early scholar Ibrahim ibn Adham, who was asked this very question.

The Question Put to Ibrahim ibn Adham

People came to Ibrahim ibn Adham and asked why their duas were not being answered, despite Allah's clear promise to respond. His reply was striking: "Your hearts have died through eight things." He then listed the reasons that deaden the heart and block the response to supplication.

The Eight Reasons

He explained that our duas go unanswered because: we know the rights of Allah over us but do not fulfil them; we recite the Qur'an but do not act by its limits; we claim to love the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) but abandon his Sunnah; we claim to fear death but do not prepare for it; Allah has warned us of Shaytan as an enemy yet we obey him; we seek refuge from the Fire yet throw ourselves toward it by our deeds; we busy ourselves with the faults of others while ignoring our own; and we eat the blessings of Allah without giving thanks for them.

The Lesson: A Living Heart

The point of his answer is not to make us despair, but to wake us up. Allah always hears and always responds — but the response requires a living, sincere heart. When a believer honours Allah's rights, acts on what they know, and turns to Him with humility and gratitude, the barriers fall away.

How Allah Answers

It also helps to remember that Allah answers dua in different ways. Sometimes He grants exactly what is asked; sometimes He withholds it for something better; and sometimes He removes a harm we never saw coming, or stores the reward for the Hereafter. A dua is never wasted. The believer's task is to keep asking with a sincere heart and to trust Allah's perfect wisdom in how He answers.

So when our duas seem unanswered, the first place to look is the heart — reviving it through sincerity, obedience, and gratitude, and trusting that Allah, who promised to respond, never breaks His promise.
